Celebrating National Creative Arts Therapy Week

One way that I have been celebrating National Creative Arts Therapy Week is by inviting my co-workers to dance during the lunch hour.  We have been meeting daily and practicing the dance recently performed by Michelle Obama and Ellen Degeneres on the Ellen show in support of Michelle’s MOVE and Gimme 5 initiatives.  It is a simple routine, and more important it is fun!  Our staff here at the VA has been connecting in ways that we never have before.  Dance has such an amazing way of bringing people together.

Maybe you will find yourself dancing with your co-workers too.  You’d be surprised who wants to dance if you just ask!

Happy Creative Arts Therapy Week!

Patient Care Benefits from Advances in Technology

Apple CEO Tim Cook visited the Palo Alto VA today during the launch of the Mobile Health Provider Program.  That’s me pictured there chatting with Tim about dance therapy.  I am excited for the endless possibilities that this technology will provide me when working with patients.  This is an exciting time to be a health care provider, especially at the VA!

Dance/Movement Therapy Update

Check out the recent ADTA newsletter, chock full of great info about dance therapy and social media, arts advocacy in the government, inovative research, and lots of reflection about the recent conference in Albuquerque, NM.  You can read about my specific contributions on pages 8 and 21.

American Dance Therapy Association Annual Conference

Dance therapy is alive and well in 2012 and stands strong in this tumultuous time in our history.  This year’s ADTA conference in Albuquerque, NM was a colorful collage of connection, new ideas, creativity, and deep wisdom.  The International Balloon Fiesta was the perfect backdrop for this meeting, as we all felt lifted by one another’s support and enthusiasm.  In the two days that I attended workshops I experienced dance through drumming, touch, eco-therapy, clinical assessment, and trauma exploration.   Dance as therapy is crucial to the healing of humanity’s wounds; the evidence cannot be ignored.   So wherever you are, dance strong, dance loud, and dance often.  You owe it to yourself.

For Veterans, a Surge of New Treatments for Trauma

So happy to see the media paying attention to the success of mind-body therapies in treating trauma symptoms with Veterans and military members.
